Department of B.A (J.E.P)
The mission of the Department of Languages is to provide quality education to the students leading to their all-round development in order to create able professionals and responsible citizens of tomorrow who are able to cope with the formidable challenges facing them.
The vision of the Department of Languages is to create an environment where learning becomes a pleasure and seeking of knowledge becomes a passion, to nurture the students with care so that they are able to reach the zenith of success and to create strong bonds with them so that they become an integral part of the family.
The Department of Languages in T. John College has witnessed growth and development since its establishment in 1993. The course offered in this department is B.A. (JEP). It is a department where innate talent in the students is nurtured with the help of dedicated staff. The students experience a kind of metamorphosis eventually evolving into individuals with an all-round development. The focus of the department has always been on academics as a result the department has been credited with good academic results including a gold medal in Psychology in Bangalore University which has been won by Ms. Swathy Nandakumar (Batch 2012-2016), the 3rd rank in Optional English in Bangalore University which was won by Ms. Preeti Vijayan and a 3rd rank in Optional English and in Science and Society by Ms. Anjali P. Perumayan (Batch 2014-till date). The good academic results are based on innovative teaching practices such as teaching with the help of audio-visual aids, peer teaching/learning, assignments, teach back sessions by students, movie screenings pertaining to lessons in the syllabus, solving model question papers and questions in the question bank, oral presentations, PPT presentations, providing notes and reference materials to the students and conducting tutorials.
The department has successfully introduced the research culture among the students through ‘Research Integrated Teaching/Learning’. It has always supported research done by the staff and the students. It has motivated students to take up research projects, to do internships, to participate in seminars, conferences and workshops organized by the parent institution as well as other institutions and to undertake active research. Mr. Shahid Salam Khan has done a research project under the aegis of the department in collaboration with the prestigious Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas, USA. The department has organized Maadhyama: The National Media Seminar to sensitize the students to diverse emerging trends in media. A research club has also been initiated in the department for the students to give a boost to the research activities. Ms. Raksha B.’s (Batch 2015-till date) research paper ‘An Exploratory Study of the Self and Moksha from Advaita Vedanta and Western Perspectives’ has won ‘The Best Paper Award’ in Dharmasthala, Ujire in 2016. Ms. Akimana Ines Liliane has pursued research in Psychology and has presented her research paper in an international conference that has brought her much appreciation.
The students are given a wide exposure to knowledge and experience in the industry through guest lectures and industrial visits which along with the ‘Value Added Programmes’ conducted in the department constitutes the supplementary knowledge enrichment drive. The ‘Value Added Programme’ is an exploratory area that helps the students to explore a new horizon in terms of knowledge related to communication skills, film making and psychological counselling thereby providing them a hands-on experience in these domains which supplements their curricular learning. The students of this department have displayed tremendous interest in research as a result they have written valuable research papers. In the literary domain, the students are encouraged to do translations from various Indian languages into English. Ms. Deepika Rachel R. of B.A. (JEP) has translated Basavanna’s poems from Kannada to English. The students are encouraged to make short films and documentary films and also do video presentations on the topics in their university curriculum. The students are given opportunities to engage in the tasks of editing and reporting in relation to Journalism which would give them first-hand practical experience related to the subject.
The students are allowed to cultivate and manifest their talent in drama, photography, public speaking, quiz, debate, poetry writing, singing, dancing, gardening, culinary arts as well as sports which helps them to receive a holistic education. Many social activities are undertaken by the students under the aegis of Humanities Club which is a part of the department. Manokendra: The Psychology Club is also credited with organizing various activities and events related to Psychology. It also brings out a journal in Psychology Sankalpa. The department has Spark: The Literary Club and The Sports Club under it which is instrumental in showcasing the best talent during special occasions thereby making valuable contributions in various events. The department is credited with publishing the annual multidisciplinary journal of TJGI Samyoga and the annual magazine of TJGI Echoes.
The department has worthy and eminent alumni such as:
• Mr. Ebenezer Breman Veerasingham (2009-2012): is a Member of the Parliament in Sri Lanka after being nominated in the National List for this year’s Youth Parliament in Sri Lanka.
• Mr. Akshay Sidharth (2011-2014): A winner of the runner up award for the film The Eleventh Hour in the 9th Panchajanyam International Film Festival, Chittur, Palakkad and the best film award in Allura Media Fest organized by St. Joseph’s College of Arts, Bangalore.
The department maintains an active alumni network involving its alumni in various engagements from time to time. A cosmopolitan environment is fostered in the department in order to provide support to the foreign students. The department plays a multi-faceted role in the development of the students and in contributing towards the progress of the parent institution, T. John College.
